Super 8 (2011)

It’s one of those “amazing until…” movies. What kid growing up didn’t want to make a movie of their own? Joe Lamb (Joel Courtney) and friends not only had the will to do it, they also had a contest worth entering at school for the best short film. As filming for their zombie movie gets rolling Joe’s mother dies in a freak accident at work and now Joe has to decide if he still wants to go through with it. With the addition of Alice Dainard (Elle Fanning) to the role of “wife” Joe is instantly back on the project along with a little crush on Alice. A scene in the their film calls for a detective to meet his wife at a train station and this is where Super 8 really starts. As the children are setting up for the shot, an actual train is seen in the distance, which prompts them to scramble to get it on film. They aren’t the only ones who know the train is coming, a truck also does and has it has it’s sights on derailing it, which it does by hitting it head on. The train crashes, the dust clears, and one of the compartments is clearly holding something alive. This creature breaks free within minutes after the crash and runs wild in the small town.

This movie was great! It was directed incredibly well. The camera told a story with every shot and nothing was wasted. J.J. Abrams has mastered his craft, not to mention Steven Spielberg was there to help out! There were a couple scenes where I felt the touch of Spielberg. Spielberg loves using sound effects to drive his stories and Super 8 had it’s moments where the scene was driven by a certain sound effect to a point of intense drama. The kids in the film were pretty good, nothing really to complain about other than the fact that kids are ignorant and normally unintelligent, which kind can be annoying to a lot of people. The highlight of the film is Elle Fanning. She is AMAZING! She must be nominated for best supporting actress. There are two scenes where she completely steals your emotions and takes you for a ride. She is truly electric. Another great aspect is that J.J. did not make this movie to be taken literally, it’s a funny movie and knows that certain points are ludacris and off the wall. What I’m saying is that it pokes fun at itself and I like a movie that has the humility to do so. The monster is very cool, although I kind of wish I never saw it. Spoiler alert, you see the monster!

The only unbearable characteristic is the one thing I don’t think the movie could have changed unless it cut it completely out. I don’t want to say what it is, but I can tell you that it has to do with the ending. I guess a monster movie is challenging to have a satisfying ending, although it has been done and I wish this film had it. It really knocks it down in the grand scheme of the movies I’ll remember and talk about for a long time to come.

I would recommend anyone who is into supernatural monster movie, where it’s like a scientist experiment gone wrong type deal. It’s almost worth it to see Elle Fanning. She is a rising star…

dunk-o-meter: 7.5/10 <–knocked down at least a full point b/c of that something that should have been different!
