Bridesmaids (2011)

Love this movie! Annie (Kristen Wiig) is a 30ish year old woman who’s going through a tough spot in her life. A failed business, broken relationship, weird roommates, and to top it all off everyone around her is getting married! Oh no! Doesn’t this already sound like hokey romcom starting Katherine Hiegl?? Well, it’s not. Annie’s best friend from childhood, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is the bride-to-be and has chosen Annie as the Maid of Honor to plan all parties and events. This is where it gets interesting…

This is probably going to end up being one of the funniest movies of the year! The opening scene is HILARIOUS! It was one of those scenes where I was laughing through most of the next scene as well and giggling like a little girl trying not to be the person laughing out loud at “nothing”. Kriten Wiig is amazing. She really does a great job and her comedic acting is untouchable, plus she’s not too bad on the eyes which is never a bad thing. Aka she’s hot… They really pack it in, scene after scene, one on top of the other are all funny in their own ways. The characters compliment each other well, for instance, Kristen Wiig’s opposite is Helen (Rose Byrne). Helen is the hot girl with all the money who befriends Lillian and takes over Annie’s spot as the best friend. This dynamic is what the movie thrives off and is the focal point of everything wrong in Annie’s life. Toward the end it gets a little sappy, but they had to do that to wrap up the story and I don’t think they linger on the montages and hugs too long. To piggy back on what I just said, the movie is a bit long though haha (125 min).  That’s quite long for a comedy, but I didn’t really feel it until the very end.

What I don’t like about this movie is how critics are acting like it’s an anomaly that a comedy starring women is funny. I guess this is the first time a girl has been funny! No. But, it’s true, this far exceeds most comedies put out nowadays, so maybe they have a point. A girl that’s funny sits in her skin a bit more comfortably and that’s always attractive. Anyway, GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! It rocks!

dunk-o-meter: 7/10 <–it is still a comedy folks hehe
